France is the European country with the highest birth rate:
In 2016, the number of births (785,000) decreased by 14,000 after a decrease of 20,000 the previous year. These figures therefore reflect a birth rate that dropped for the second year in a row. This now stands at 1.93 children per woman, as compared with 1.96 in 2015 and 2 in 2014, after 8 years of stability.
The lower birth rate is also due to fewer women of child-bearing age. The number of women 20 to 40 years old has gone down since the mid-1990s because women born during the baby boom years are gradually moving out of this age bracket. The recent drop is most noticeable with women aged 25-29. The birth rate for women over 35, which had steadily risen since the early 1980s, stabilized in 2014. “However, the birth rate is still quite high in a France», emphasises the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies. In fact, France has the highest fertility rate in the European Union, just ahead Ireland, and far in front of Portugal, the least fertile EU country.
